European Protected Areas of good quality?!

The commitment of students is often of great importance to bring research to a successful conclusion. Within the European EcoPotential project ( an inventory was made for several European Protected Areas what their qualities were (in terms of ecological functions, natural structures, ecosystem services, risks, management). Results can indicate which aspects in the policy and management of nature reserves can be successfully managed in order to get an even more sustainable environment. Because it is a comprehensive study, student engagement was essential. An important part was carried out by students at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) in Texel and Yerseke. HuFoSS has provided support to a student through a grant, and will continue to support progress for the coming period.
