New tool to measure the socio-ecological status of Protected Areas: the Protection Level Index – PLI

HuFoSS colleagues have participated in the development of an innovative tool to measure the socio-ecological status of Protected Areas (PAs). Until now such tools were developed in a top-down way without involvement of those who have to use such a tool. Also, these tools were mainly focussing on managerial issues and not on the environmental condition of the area. Now we have developed, in a bottom-up procedure together with practitioners, a new tool that includes several environmental indicators, the Protection Level Index (PLI). PLI can be used to keep track of the conservation status of PAs and the progress and effectiveness of PA management activities. More information can be found in the freely accessible paper entitled “A practical novel assessment tool for the socio-ecological condition of Protected Areas: the Protection Level Index (PLI)”, by CA Hummel, YAM Mellink, LJ Bienfait, MC Adamescu, C Cazacu, M Heurich, FM Medina, R Morkūnė, J Švajda, H Hummel, in the Journal for Nature Conservation, 2021 (see https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jnc.2021.126065)
