Looking back on Santander: a stakeholder in the spotlight

For the purpose of engaging stakeholders from all participating coastal areas in the MARBEFES research project, we undertook a trip to Santander, where we were welcomed by our colleagues from the Instituto de Hidráulica Ambiental (IHCantabria). The meetings we had with stakeholders were pleasant and thought-provoking, and we thank all of you for gracing us with your presence and for bringing your experience and insight on board of the project.

A special shout-out to the people of Navigatio Santander, who received us with great warmth and enthusiasm. Navigatio is an association that restores maritime heritage for rowing activities that combine sportive and social values. With their historical rowboats they take part in national as well as international races and parades, they even participated in a tribute ‘flotilla’ in the Thames marking the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The association is also involved in Ocean Literacy projects to educate young and old Cantabrians about the importance of the sea for the welfare of society and the health of the environment.

It was inspiring to become acquainted with such a multifaceted association. When we return next year for the second round of stakeholder visits, we will surely reserve time in our program to join the wonderful Navigatio on a rowing trip in the Bay of Santander.
