Directly after our fieldwork around the Porsangerfjord, we continued our travels to Spitsbergen. Our research areas were the Adventfjord (near Longyearbyen) and the Kongsfjord (near Ny Alesund). This visit contributed to our understanding on what it means to live and work at a place that is as unique as Spitsbergen. Part-time residence is the norm which causes for the society to be very young and extremely dynamic. All stakeholders were very outspoken about social and climatic topics. Changes in ice-cover due to higher temperatures, mass tourism, and local identity are real challenges to cope with. We want to thank Sabine and Ingvild from Akvaplan-Niva very much for arranging meetings with such a variety of different stakeholders.
