In late March, we embarked on a journey to the Azores, an archipelago situated in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean. Renowned as Portugal’s hidden gem, the Azores comprise nine volcanic islands that are a paradise for nature enthusiasts, thanks to the presence of lush forests, breathtaking waterfalls, and natural hot springs.
Before we could indulge in the islands’ offerings, we got to work, conducting stakeholder interviews and surveys. We engaged with a diverse array of stakeholders, each possessing their unique viewpoints regarding the coastal and marine environment of which they are part. Our conversations spanned various groups, such as whale watching operators and BirdWatchers, but also researchers at the University and official authorities.
Through these activities we aimed to gain insights into the perspectives of different actors within the local community. Some recurring topics included sustainable tourism, conservation efforts, and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. We extend our gratitude to all the stakeholders who generously shared their knowledge and experiences with us.
Our colleagues from the University of the Azores played a crucial role in the success of our trip. They helped us navigate the islands, discover the tastiest local cuisines, and also facilitated translations and interviews. We couldn’t have done it without them.
We left the Azores with a deeper understanding of the islands’ rich natural and cultural heritage and the importance of preserving it. Another unforgettable experience! Obrigado Azores!
